Fiji Bati head coach, Wise Kativerata, emphasized the importance of instilling fundamental rugby league knowledge among aspiring players during a recent two-day training workshop in Labasa. He highlighted that changing the perception among the youth that only rugby sevens and fifteens are worthy sports is crucial for the growth of rugby league in the Northern Division.
Kativerata mentioned that rugby league is a flourishing sport that can offer pathways for emerging talents to succeed and build careers. He referenced successful players from the Northern regions, such as Semi Valemei and Semi Radradra, who have excelled in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL).
He asserted that while the sport is straightforward, mastering its basics is key for players’ success. Furthermore, he expressed optimism about the opportunities available for Northern-based players to join professional clubs internationally. He stressed the need for grassroots development, advocating for the introduction of players as young as 14 into the sport. This initiative is part of a six-year project in which the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) will reach out to communities in Vanua Levu and other maritime islands, emphasizing development beyond Viti Levu.
Among the workshop participants was female rugby coach Motu Lalagavesi, who encouraged women to explore rugby league for its engaging format and enjoyable nature, particularly noting the intriguing six-tackle rule. Northern State Rugby League interim president, Alan Tuinasoni, also highlighted the importance of developing women’s teams, urging the 22 registered clubs in the division to focus on this aspect.
This initiative not only aims to build a strong foundation for rugby league in the Northern Division but also to inspire women to participate, promising a bright future for both male and female players in the sport.
The article reflects an encouraging movement towards inclusivity in sports, showcasing the potential of rugby league as a significant part of the community’s athletic fabric and offering hope for future development and talent recognition. By fostering an environment for all players, these efforts pave the way for a diverse and skilled player pool that can thrive both locally and internationally.
