The initiative to teach fundamental rugby league skills to aspiring players is poised to enhance the talent pool in the Northern Division. This message was emphasized by Fiji Bati head coach, Wise Kativerata, following a two-day basic training workshop held in Labasa.
Kativerata urged the youth to shift their perception that only rugby sevens and fifteens are esteemed forms of rugby, explaining that rugby league is an evolving sport with the potential for athletes to build successful careers. He highlighted the success of local players like Semi Valemi and Semi Radradra, who have made their mark in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL), showcasing the opportunities available for Northern-based athletes.
He stressed the importance of mastering the game’s basics as a pathway for players to excel. With a focus on grassroots development, Kativerata advocated for the introduction of rugby league to players as young as 14, outlining a six-year project that the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) plans to implement, expanding development efforts across Vanua Levu and various maritime islands.
Interestingly, female participants are also encouraged to engage with the sport. Motu Lalagavesi, the Macuata women’s rugby coach, expressed her enthusiasm for rugby league, noting the appeal of the six-tackle rule and the enjoyment the sport brings. Additionally, Northern State Rugby League interim president, Alan Tuinasoni, emphasized the necessity for the 22 registered clubs in the division to also focus on fostering women’s teams.
This development initiative is an optimistic sign for the future of rugby league in Fiji, particularly in the Northern Division, as it aims to create pathways for both men and women to participate and thrive in the sport.
