Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata emphasized the importance of equipping young players with fundamental rugby league knowledge to foster a robust talent pool in the Northern Division. In a recent interview following a two-day basic training workshop conducted in Labasa, Kativerata spoke about the need to change the perception among youth that rugby sevens and fifteens are the only respected forms of rugby.
He underlined that rugby league is rapidly evolving and offers promising career opportunities for emerging talents. Citing examples of players like Semi Valemi and Semi Radradra, who hail from the North and have successfully made their mark in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL), Kativerata highlighted the sport’s potential for local players.
“Rugby league is a simple sport, but mastering its basics is crucial for players to excel,” he stated, expressing optimism about the opportunities for Northern players to join professional clubs overseas. He proposed a grassroots development initiative aimed at introducing players as young as 14 to the sport. This initiative is part of a six-year project where the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) plans to expand rugby league development efforts beyond Viti Levu to include Vanua Levu and surrounding maritime islands.
Motu Lalagavesi, a female participant and Macuata women’s rugby coach, expressed enthusiasm about the sport, noting that women should explore rugby league due to its engaging six-tackle rule and enjoyable gameplay. Northern State Rugby League interim president, Alan Tuinasoni, echoed this sentiment, encouraging the 22 registered clubs in the division to prioritize establishing women’s teams.
The vibrant activity within the Labasa and Dreketi zones, with Labasa hosting eight clubs and Dreketi-Seaqaqa accommodating eight, while Bua contributes six, reflects a strong community investment in rugby league development.
This initiative not only promotes rugby league as a viable sport but also paves the way for increased participation among women, further diversifying and strengthening the talent pool in Fiji.
In summary, the commitment to cultivating young talent and embracing rugby league across demographics is a positive step for the sport in Fiji. With dedicated efforts, there is potential for growth and success at both local and international levels.
