Rugby League: A Game for Change in Fiji?

As rugby league continues to gain popularity in Fiji, Vodafone Fiji Bati head coach Waisake Kativerata emphasizes the potential of the sport to address social challenges and foster a culture of faith within the team. Kativerata believes that by promoting rugby league across the nation, they can tackle social issues such as drug abuse and HIV.

“I’m working to expand the reach of rugby league in Fiji. We recognize the challenges young people face with drugs and HIV, and we aim to be role models for them,” he stated. The coach plans for the Bati players to engage with grassroots communities throughout Fiji, inspiring children through their actions.

“I need role models; it’s essential we have them, which I’ve conveyed to the players,” Kativerata noted. He further elaborated on the importance of faith, family, and the sport, noting how church and rugby can complement each other.

“Faith is paramount, followed by family and then rugby. Sometimes we overlook the family aspect, and we need to strengthen that foundation while nurturing faith,” he added. Kativerata suggested that if they create a place for worship near sporting venues, many young boys might choose sports over church. “So, we should incorporate faith into their sporting experience,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Bati are gearing up for the Pacific Championship set to take place in October.
