Oceania Rugby’s Participation and Pathway Manager, Tirani Uluinakauvadra, has called for sports organizations to prioritize safeguarding to combat abuse and foster safer environments. His comments followed the TEAM UP Regional Safeguarding Workshop held at Tanoa International Hotel, where he emphasized the necessity for proactive measures in rugby and other sports.

Uluinakauvadra pointed out that safeguarding often takes a backseat to the competition and the game itself. He remarked, “While many might not prioritize safeguarding, with the pressing issues we face, it’s crucial to adopt a proactive stance instead of reacting only when problems arise.” He underscored the alarming prevalence of abuse in sports and the critical need for education and awareness about existing support structures.

“Many individuals lack awareness about the support systems in their respective countries, which aggravates the situation,” he added. Uluinakauvadra also highlighted the importance of leadership within sports organizations, asserting that genuine change must originate from governance levels. “When changes are initiated from the top, it’s far more effective,” he said, stressing that administrators must be at the forefront of creating a safe sporting environment.

The workshop brought together athletes and sports administrators from across the region to examine effective mechanisms for safeguarding. Uluinakauvadra’s insights reflect a significant commitment from Oceania Rugby to confront safeguarding challenges directly, aiming to ensure sports remain a safe and supportive space for all participants.

In summary, Uluinakauvadra’s remarks underscore a growing recognition of the need for structured safeguards in sports, encouraging a culture of safety and awareness. By focusing on education and leadership, there is hope that the sports community can create a more secure environment for every athlete and participant.
