Fijian rugby legend Waisale Serevi has been a significant advocate for using sports as a means of driving positive change, particularly among the youth. His work through the Serevi International Academy of Rugby—“Stay Strong, Say No to Drugs”—aims to transform the lives of young individuals by harnessing the power of rugby.
Over the past 15 years, Serevi has traveled to over 80 countries and significantly impacted more than 200 young lives by helping them secure university scholarships through his academy. His experience in the United States has shaped his belief that similar success can be replicated in Fiji, particularly in addressing the pressing issue of drug abuse among its youth.
“My goal is to help our local kids gain opportunities for contracts abroad, scholarships, and education,” Serevi shared, highlighting the discipline and commitment inherent in sports. He believes that athletics fosters a sense of responsibility and encourages young athletes to stay healthy and make positive life choices.
At a recent rugby camp held at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, Serevi spoke passionately about how rugby serves as more than just a sport—it is a pathway for empowerment. He emphasizes that while skill development in rugby is essential, the core mission of the academy extends beyond the field: “It’s more about empowering, encouraging, and motivating kids.” The academy’s approach is multi-faceted, promoting resilience and personal growth alongside athletic training.
The camp’s theme, “Stay Strong, Say No to Drugs,” resonates deeply within the community, as Serevi champions the message that true strength lies in making constructive decisions and resisting negative influences. His philosophy underscores the importance of cultivating not just skilled athletes but also individuals of character and integrity.
Serevi’s ongoing initiatives position the Serevi Academy as a beacon of hope for Fijian youth, demonstrating that with the right mentorship and guidance, they can navigate life’s challenges and aspire toward brighter futures. His commitment to enriching lives through rugby is commendable, emphasizing the potential for sports to make a substantial difference in society.
Overall, Serevi’s efforts exemplify how sports can be a transformative force in communities, fostering personal growth and resilience among the next generation of Fijians.
