The Drua Foundation, in collaboration with the New Zealand Government, has launched an innovative rugby development initiative aimed at empowering remote communities in Fiji through sports, education, and healthcare. This program recognizes rugby’s potential as a unifying force and a vehicle for positive change.

Set to take place from August 19 to 22, a four-day training program in Naitasiri will target rural coaches and match officials, with an emphasis on increasing women’s participation in rugby. The initiative will culminate in a youth rugby sevens tournament on August 22 at Ratu Cakobau Park, showcasing Under-14 boys’ and Under-16 girls’ teams from regions including Serua, Naitasiri, and Namosi.

The initiative has received a financial boost of FJ$87,000 from New Zealand’s Pacific Sports for Development Fund, aiming to strengthen grassroots rugby while supporting social outcomes in health and education. New Zealand High Commissioner to Fiji, Charlotte Darlow, expressed pride in supporting the Drua Foundation’s vision, which extends beyond rugby to include education and health initiatives. Participants will gain access to globally recognized qualifications such as World Rugby’s Level 1 First Aid in Rugby, coaching, and strength and conditioning courses, equipping them to run effective and safe rugby programs in their communities.

Mark Evans, CEO of the Fijian Drua, emphasized the importance of inclusivity and outreach, particularly in regions that may not have access to such opportunities. He stated, “We’re incredibly grateful to the New Zealand government for their backing. As a club that represents the whole of Fiji, it’s vital we give back.” The Drua Foundation plans to expand the program further into more communities, reinforcing its commitment to creating a positive impact through rugby.

This initiative is significant not only for the sport itself but also as a model of how sport can be leveraged to promote broader social values, including health, education, and community development. By fostering these ideals within remote communities, the Drua Foundation is paving the way for a brighter future for Fijian youth.

Overall, the Drua Foundation’s efforts represent a hopeful step towards realizing the full potential of sport in building healthier, more engaged communities. Engaging local youth through rugby can inspire not only athletic excellence but also personal growth and social cohesion, proving that the love for rugby can truly change lives in Fiji.
