The upcoming Epic 7s rugby tournament is set to take place this weekend, January 24-25, at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. This event marks the second edition of the tournament, following its successful inaugural run in Nadi last year.

The two-day event will welcome 32 men’s teams and 24 under-21 teams, with the primary objective of raising funds for the construction of a new church for the All-Nations Christian Fellowship. Tournament director Vilitati Galivia has emphasized the importance of the event for the community, stating, “This rugby 7s tournament is to help raise funds in building a church for the All-Nations Christian Fellowship.”

Currently, participants include 29 men’s teams and 16 U21 teams, with limited slots remaining: two spots for men’s teams and eight for U21 teams. In terms of prizes, the men’s division boasts a significant reward of $6,000 for the winning team, along with a complimentary set of rugby jerseys. Runners-up will earn $2,500, while semifinalists will receive $600. For the under-21 category, the champions can expect a prize of $3,000 plus a set of muscle vests, with the runners-up taking home $1,000 and semifinalists earning $300.

Among the notable teams to keep an eye on are Tabadamu, the Wardens, Gau Kacau, and the Dominion Brothers, who will defend their title in the U21 division. Tickets for the event are affordably priced, with day one costing $7 for adults and $3 for kids, while day two will be $10 for adults and $5 for children.

As the tournament aims not only to entertain but also to serve a greater purpose, it offers a unique opportunity for camaraderie and community engagement, showcasing the spirit of rugby while supporting a worthy cause. The excitement surrounding the event may also encourage more community initiatives and support for local charitable projects in the future.
