The John Ian Nasson Sanday Duavata Rugby Grand 7s tournament has officially kicked off today at the Tailevu North College ground in Korovou. This highly anticipated event features a competitive roster of 32 men’s teams and six women’s teams, with gameplay scheduled to unfold over the next two days. This tournament stands out as the first major event organized by the Duavata Rugby Club tournament committee following the success of two mini 7s events held last year.
Waisake Tanidrala Matanavou, the tournament director, underscored the initiative’s goal of engaging youth in sports and steering them away from criminal activities while simultaneously fostering grassroots rugby development within the region. He highlighted the event’s dual purpose, which includes nurturing local talent for larger tournaments and creating job opportunities in rugby at both local and international levels.
Fans can expect thrilling matches, with teams such as the Viti Roofing Devo Babas, fresh off their victory at the Fiji Bitter Tabadamu 7s in Navua, battling it out against strong contenders like DXC Army Green and Navy. Notably, the tournament also acts as a scouting opportunity, as selectors from the Northland Rugby Union will be present to evaluate talent for their extended squad ahead of the upcoming Vanua Cup.
The proceeds from this tournament are set to contribute towards the construction of a clubhouse and gym for the rugby club, reinforcing the commitment to enhancing rugby development in the community. Matanavou has warmly invited local residents to come out and support the event, which promises an exhilarating atmosphere filled with outstanding rugby action. Admission fees are modest, with entry set at $5 for adults, $3 for secondary school students, and free for primary school students.
This tournament not only highlights the deep-rooted passion for rugby in Fiji but also symbolizes the community’s dedication to fostering youth development and promoting active lifestyles. The excitement surrounding the event emphasizes rugby’s crucial role in uniting the community and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
