The 2025 Vodafone Deans competition is set to launch this Saturday with zonal competitions taking place at multiple venues across Fiji. The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU) has confirmed that the tournament has received the necessary approvals from the Ministry of Education and games have been sanctioned by Fiji Rugby Union, allowing them to proceed with preparations for this eagerly anticipated season.
At a press conference, FSSRU Vice President Biu Colati expressed gratitude toward the Ministry and the acting CEO of Fiji Rugby Union for their support during the approval process. He emphasized the importance of safety for all participants and highlighted the excitement surrounding the return of the Deans competition in 2025.
Colati noted that many schools have begun their preparations with a record number of friendly matches both locally and internationally, showcasing the dedication of students and teachers in getting ready for the competition. This year, preparations appear to have reached new heights compared to previous years, with increased participation from schools traveling abroad for friendly matches.
He also addressed logistical considerations, reassuring that ground space for matches will not be a problem. Colati stated that ground availability has never been an issue for the FSSRU, as schools have their own facilities.
Koli Sewabu, the acting chief executive of Fiji Rugby Union, confirmed that funds have been allocated to support the FSSRU and ensure a smooth start to the zonal competitions this week. This financial backing is a sign of commitment to enhancing participation and elevating competitive standards for the young athletes involved.
The collaborative efforts between the FSSRU, Fiji Rugby Union, and the Ministry of Education reflect an optimistic outlook for the upcoming season, fostering a supportive environment for youth rugby across Fiji. As schools prepare to showcase their talents, there is a shared enthusiasm for the positive community spirit these events promote.
This year’s Deans competition not only highlights athletic talent but also aims to enhance collaboration and governance in Fiji’s school rugby, setting a hopeful tone for fostering future stars in the sport.
