Eroni Sarasau, a 19-year-old tight head prop, has no regrets about putting his studies on hold to pursue a rugby career. Representing Fiji in the Under-20 national squad, Sarasau hails from Lomati, Nabukelevu in Kadavu and has a familial connection to Rotuma.
Initially planning to join university, Sarasau chose instead to focus on team tours this year, acknowledging the challenge of balancing education and his rugby aspirations. “Juggling both education and rugby is a bit tight, so I chose rugby,” he explained, demonstrating his commitment to the sport.
For the past three years, Sarasau has been a member of the Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Unit (HPU) and currently plays for the Naitasiri Under-20 team. Looking ahead to 2025, he is determined to achieve his goals and help create history with his team. Inspired by the success of his uncle, Etonia Waqa, he aspires to secure a professional rugby contract and acknowledges the importance of mastering the fundamentals of his position.
Sarasau credits the HPU with teaching him the nuances of rugby at various levels, emphasizing the significant transition from high school to provincial and national competitions. He began playing for Naitasiri at the age of 16 and aims to make the senior team by next year.
He expresses deep gratitude to his family, particularly his grandparents in Kadavu, for their unwavering support throughout his rugby journey since he started playing at the age of eight.
Sarasau’s story is a reminder of the sacrifices young athletes make in pursuit of their dreams. His dedication and focus on both personal development and teamwork provide a hopeful outlook for his future in rugby. As he continues to grow both as a player and individual, fans will undoubtedly look forward to seeing what he can accomplish in the years to come.
