While many students are enjoying their holiday jobs and festive activities, Ilaitia Tagicakibau, a 16-year-old student from Sila Central High School, has chosen to dedicate his time to rugby. He joined the Nakelo Babas team to compete in the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, which kicked off at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.

Tagicakibau’s journey in rugby began in his childhood, and he expresses a strong desire to advance in the sport and possibly turn it into a career. His ambition is fueled by prayer and encouragement from fellow village youth, which led him to join his local team. He emphasizes the importance of treating every game as a final, a mantra instilled by their coach.

Inspired by his rugby idol, Kitione Salawa, a flanker for the Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians, Tagicakibau is focused on honing his skills. In addition to rugby union, he plays rugby league as a center for his school team. With gratitude for the support from his family and a determination to rise above criticism, he actively seeks advice from more experienced players to enhance his game.

Though his primary ambition is to become a professional rugby player, Tagicakibau also has a backup plan to join the British Army if things do not go as expected. His dedication to both sport and personal goals exemplifies resilience and a strong work ethic.

This story serves as a reminder of the power of passion and determination in pursuing one’s dreams, especially for young athletes like Tagicakibau. With hard work and commitment, he may well achieve the goals he has set for himself in rugby and beyond.
