For 19-year-old rugby player Kusitino Raquraqura, the sport represents not just a pastime but a pathway to his future. As a member of the Nakavu Under-21 team, he has decided to pause his education in order to fully dedicate himself to rugby. His commitment has paid off, as he earned a spot on the squad competing in the prestigious Marist 7s tournament.
Despite being the youngest competitor in the lineup, Raquraqura is excited about the challenge ahead and expresses his gratitude for the opportunity. “I want to thank my coach and manager for selecting me in the best 12 to play in the Marist 7s. It’s my first time playing in this tournament, and as the youngest player on the team, I feel happy and grateful for this opportunity,” he shared.
Raquraqura’s choice to focus on rugby has not come without its hurdles. Initially, his family had concerns about him stepping away from education, advising him to prioritize school. Nevertheless, he stands firm in his belief that rugby could pave the way for numerous opportunities in his future.
Currently, Raquraqura aims to utilize the Marist 7s as a launching point for his rugby career. The tournament, taking place at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, is a vital platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and aspirations. As he competes, Raquraqura embodies the spirit of perseverance resonating with many young athletes, similar to 16-year-old Ilaitia Tagicakibau, who recently represented his district team at the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament.
Both athletes highlight the importance of commitment and the drive to succeed, often making significant personal sacrifices to pursue their dreams. With hard work and determination, Raquraqura aims to carve a successful path for himself in rugby, serving as an inspiring figure for his peers and younger generations.
The Marist 7s tournament not only shines a light on emerging talent like Raquraqura but also emphasizes the role of sports in bringing communities together and shaping futures. With an encouraging support system behind them, these young athletes are well-positioned to chase their dreams and inspire others along the way.
