For fullback Waisake Ravuiwasa, competing for the Shop N Save Police rugby team in the Vodafone Ratu Sukuna Bowl tournament was a significant moment in his sporting journey. His debut in this prestigious event became even more meaningful as he had the opportunity to play alongside his older brother, Inoke Ravuiwasa, who serves as the tight head prop. The Ravuiwasa brothers led their team to a narrow victory over the Army, finishing the match with a score of 20-19 at the HFC Bank Stadium on Saturday.
The siblings, who are proud representatives of Tavuki in Taveuni, also hold maternal ties to Susui in Vanuabalavu, Lau. The victory was particularly emotional for them as they dedicated it to their late father, Julian Ravuiwasa, a police officer at the Taveuni Police station who passed away in June.
“I thank God that we’re able to play together; I’ve been trying for a very long time,” Waisake expressed, reflecting on the significance of the moment. He added, “My late dad always told me not to give up on it. I only wished he was here to see us.”
His brother Inoke, who has been a part of the Blues for the past nine years, also shares this sentiment as they honor their father’s legacy on the field.
This heartfelt tribute from the Ravuiwasa brothers highlights the importance of family ties and the emotional connections that sport can create. Their perseverance and dedication serve as an inspiring reminder to cherish loved ones and pursue dreams, even in the face of loss. As they move forward, both brothers look to keep their father’s spirit alive in their rugby careers.
