Rugby Dreams: The Young Athlete Choosing Grit Over Holiday Fun

While many students are busy with seasonal jobs and recreational activities, 16-year-old Ilaitia Tagicakibau is making strides in his rugby career. Instead of typical holiday engagements, the Sila Central High School student is representing his district team at the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s, which kicked off at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.

This tournament marks Tagicakibau’s debut with the Nakelo Babas team. He reflects on his long-standing passion for rugby, sharing, “I started playing rugby ever since I was young.” A strong belief in the sport fuels his aspirations, as he often prays, “with the intention that God gives me an opportunity so that I can progress in this sport and pursue a career out of rugby.”

Encouragement from a fellow youth in his village guided him towards joining the team. “I started training with the team until I joined them in tournaments,” Tagicakibau explained. He emphasizes the importance of dedication, stating that their coach advises them to treat each game as a final.

Inspired by Kitione Salawa, a flanker for the Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians, Tagicakibau plays in the flanker position himself at school and also participates in rugby league as a center. He expresses gratitude for the support from his family regarding his passion for rugby.

Despite facing criticism, he remains steadfast in his ambitions, often seeking advice from more experienced players to refine his skills and achieve his dream of becoming a professional rugby player. Should rugby not materialize into a career, he has a backup plan of joining the British Army.
