Rugby Dreams: Penaia Cakobau’s Rise to the Flying Fijians

Rising rugby talent Penaia Cakobau has received a call-up to join the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they aim to reclaim the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This momentous occasion allows Cakobau to fulfill his dream of donning the white jersey and competing alongside some of Fiji’s top rugby players.

At 30 years old, Cakobau’s rugby journey began at Queen Victoria School, where he was part of the team that clinched the Vodafone Under-18 Deans Trophy in 2011. Following his local success, he took his career overseas, playing in France and with New Zealand’s North Harbor development team.

In 2018, he returned to Fiji and spent three years with Suva’s Skipper Cup team, before heading back to New Zealand at the close of 2022. Cakobau is now committed to enhancing his skills as a professional rugby player, with hopes of landing a Super Rugby contract.

“When I received the call, I was both excited and it felt surreal,” Cakobau shared. “At one point, I didn’t think I would get this opportunity, but now it’s a new benchmark for me. I need to work hard to maintain my place in this environment.”

By joining the Flying Fijians, Cakobau will have the opportunity to learn from esteemed players, including team captain Tevita Ikanivere and Mesulame Dolokoto. Stepping into the position previously held by Kavaia Tagivetaua, he is determined to showcase his abilities on the field.

“Every rugby player has a list of things they want to accomplish,” Cakobau stated. “You write them down, motivate yourself, and train hard, especially when no one’s looking. Anything is possible if you’re willing to make the sacrifices.”
