“Rugby Dreams: Penaia Cakobau Joins the Flying Fijians”

Emerging rugby talent Penaia Cakobau has received a call-up to the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they aim to reclaim the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This opportunity presents him with the chance to fulfill his dream of donning the national jersey and playing alongside some of the nation’s top rugby players.

At 30 years old, Cakobau’s journey in rugby began at Queen Victoria School, where he was part of the team that secured the prestigious Vodafone Under-18 Deans Trophy in 2011. After establishing a strong reputation locally, he took his rugby career overseas, competing in France and subsequently with New Zealand’s North Harbor development team.

In 2018, Cakobau returned to Fiji to play for Suva’s Skipper Cup team for three years before returning to New Zealand at the end of 2022. He is now committed to honing his skills further as a professional rugby player, with aspirations of landing a Super Rugby contract.

“Receiving the call was both exciting and surreal,” Cakobau stated. “There was a time when I didn’t think I would have this chance, but it’s now a new benchmark for me. I know I have to work diligently to keep my spot in this environment.”

Joining the Flying Fijians also provides Cakobau with the opportunity to learn from seasoned players like Captain Tevita Ikanivere and Mesulame Dolokoto. Taking on the position previously held by Kavaia Tagivetaua, he is eager to prove himself on the pitch.

“Every rugby player has goals they want to achieve,” Cakobau said. “You write them down to stay motivated and train hard, particularly when no one is watching. Anything is achievable if you’re ready to make the necessary sacrifices.”
