Rising rugby talent Penaia Cakobau has been selected to join the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they aim to reclaim the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This call-up is a significant milestone for Cakobau, allowing him to fulfill his dream of donning the national jersey and competing alongside some of the top rugby players in Fiji.
At 30 years old, Cakobau’s journey in rugby began at Queen Victoria School, where he was part of the team that triumphed in the Vodafone Under-18 Deans Trophy in 2011. After establishing himself in the local scene, he ventured abroad to further his rugby career, playing in France and later joining the North Harbor development team in New Zealand.
In 2018, he returned to Fiji and played for Suva’s Skipper Cup team for three years before heading back to New Zealand at the end of 2022. He now aims to enhance his skills as a professional player and hopes to secure a Super Rugby contract.
“When I received the call, I was both excited and it felt surreal,” Cakobau stated. “At one point, I didn’t think I would get this opportunity, but now it’s a new benchmark for me. I need to work hard to maintain my place in this environment.”
By joining the Flying Fijians, Cakobau will have the chance to learn from experienced players such as Captain Tevita Ikanivere and Mesulame Dolokoto. Taking over the position previously held by Kavaia Tagivetaua, Cakobau is eager to showcase his abilities on the field.
“Every rugby player has a list of things they want to accomplish,” he said. “You write them down, motivate yourself, and train hard, especially when no one’s looking. Anything is possible if you’re willing to make the sacrifices.”
