Eroni Sarasau, a 19-year-old rugby talent, embraces his decision to prioritize his sports career over academic studies. The tighthead prop, who hails from Lomati in Kadavu and has family ties to Rotuma, made the choice to represent Fiji in the Under-20 national squad instead of attending university.
Reflecting on his journey, Sarasau shared, “I was meant to join the university, but I chose to focus on rugby as we had tours this year.” He acknowledged the difficulty of balancing education and sports but firmly believes that dedicating himself to rugby is the right path for him.
Having spent the past three years with the Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Unit, Sarasau plays for the Naitasiri Under-20 team and is determined to achieve his goals by 2025. He expressed his desire to create history with his team next year after setting his sights on improvements since this year.
Sarasau aspires to follow in the footsteps of his uncle, Etonia Waqa, and secure a professional rugby contract. He emphasizes the importance of mastering the fundamentals in his position. “Individually you have to know all your stunts and techniques; if you want to dominate, you must be well-prepared mentally and physically,” he stated. He admires the playing style of Mesake Doge, recognizing the uniqueness of his techniques.
Being part of the High Performance Unit has been transformative for Sarasau, teaching him the differences in gameplay and preparation needed when transitioning from high school to provincial and national levels. He began his journey in rugby at the age of eight and is now aiming for a spot in the senior team when he turns 20.
Sarasau expressed gratitude for the support from his parents and grandparents, who have been his pillars since he started playing rugby. He completed his primary education in Kadavu before moving to Ratu Kadavulevu School in Year 9, a decision that has shaped his athletic journey.
This story reflects the dedication and passion of young athletes pursuing their dreams, showcasing the balance between personal ambition and family support. Sarasau’s journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring sportsmen and emphasizes the significance of focusing on one’s passion while maintaining a supportive network.
In summary, Eroni Sarasau’s commitment to rugby highlights the challenges and rewards faced by young athletes as they navigate their paths to success.
