During this festive season, while many students are engaged in holiday jobs and leisurely activities, 16-year-old Ilaitia Tagicakibau has taken a different route. The Sila Central High School student is representing his district team in the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, which commenced yesterday at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori.
For Tagicakibau, this marks his debut with the Nakelo Babas team. He expressed his lifelong passion for rugby, saying, “I started playing rugby ever since I was young.” He emphasizes the importance of faith, mentioning that he often prays for opportunities to advance his skills and possibly pursue a career in the sport.
Tagicakibau joined the team based on encouragement from a fellow village youth and soon became an integral part of the group, participating in training and tournaments. He mentioned that their coach instills in them the mentality of treating each match as if it were a final.
He draws inspiration from his rugby idol, Kitione Salawa, a flanker for the Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians. Tagicakibau plays in the flanker position for his school’s under-16 team and also competes in rugby league at the center position. He feels fortunate to have family support in pursuing his rugby aspirations and remains focused on overcoming any criticisms he faces.
Seeking guidance from older players is a common practice for him, as he aims to refine his skills and reach professional status. However, he remains pragmatic, stating that if a career in rugby doesn’t materialize, he intends to explore opportunities in the British Army.
In summary, Ilaitia Tagicakibau’s commitment to rugby amid the holiday season showcases his dedication to the sport and personal growth. His ambitions illustrate a hopeful journey towards a promising future, whether on the field or in other pursuits.
This article embodies the spirit of perseverance and determination, inspiring young athletes to chase their dreams regardless of the challenges they may face.
