In a season when many students take up holiday jobs and leisure activities, 16-year-old Ilaitia Tagicakibau from Sila Central High School committed himself to playing rugby. He represented his district team, the Nakelo Babas, at the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament, which commenced at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.
Tagicakibau, who has been playing rugby since childhood, expressed his deep passion for the sport. “I always pray that God gives me an opportunity to progress in this sport and build a career out of rugby,” he mentioned. His journey into rugby took off after encouragement from a fellow village youth, leading him to train with the team and participate in competitions.
Under the guidance of their coach, who emphasizes treating every game as if it were the finals, Tagicakibau has dedicated himself to improvement. He looks up to Fijian rugby star Kitione Salawa, mirroring his playing style as a flanker for his school’s under-16 team and also playing rugby league as a center.
Tagicakibau appreciates the unwavering support from his family in his rugby endeavors. Despite facing critiques along the way, he remains focused on his aspirations and actively seeks advice from seasoned players to hone his skills. Should a rugby career not materialize, he has identified a fallback plan: enlisting in the British Army.
This inspiring determination from a young athlete highlights the dedication and resilience that can lead to personal growth and potential opportunities in life. Tagicakibau’s journey is a testament to the idea that passion combined with hard work can open many doors, illuminating a hopeful future regardless of the obstacles one may face.
