Marist Brothers High School Under-17 player Lepani Bavai has caught the attention of international scouts during the Vodafone Deans Trophy national finals. Last Saturday, Bavai was approached by three scouts following his team’s narrow semi-final victory over Queen Victoria School, with a score of 17-15. Marist Brothers will face two-time champions Ratu Kadavulevu School in the upcoming U17 final.

In an interview, Bavai shared that he is putting the scouts’ offers on hold as he aspires to play rugby league. He credits his parents for their unwavering support throughout his journey in sports. Bavai also reflected on the intensity of the semi-final match against QVS and expressed gratitude to his teammates for maintaining their composure under pressure.

Head coach Jonetani Rika commented on their status as underdogs for the final, acknowledging the need for improvement after a closely contested semi-final. He emphasized that Ratu Kadavulevu School is a respected opponent, having won the U17 championship twice, and recognized the challenge that lies ahead.

Rika anticipates a tough match against RKS, referring to it as a “David and Goliath” scenario. He added that the team’s current focus is on the final and although there are potential plans for a trip to Japan next year if they win, their priority remains on education and academic success for the players.

Bavai noted that the level of competition in the Deans Trophy has significantly increased compared to last year, with several lesser-known schools causing upsets.
