The Nadroga Central Cluster Rugby Association organized an annual tournament at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, attracting talent from across ten primary schools. The one-day event featured schools like Cuvu District, Naidovi, and Sigatoka Methodist Primary School, illustrating the growing enthusiasm for rugby among young athletes.
Cluster President Nemani Camaicolo detailed the tournament’s structure, emphasizing the inclusion of both contact and tag rugby for various age groups, ensuring participation from Under-13s and Under-14s in contact matches and Under-9s to Under-12s in tag rugby. The aim is to nurture talent within the Nadroga/Navosa Primary Schools Sports Association, which operates through six clusters, each organizing their events to select promising players.
With nearly 700 students and teachers involved, the tournament wasn’t just a display of athleticism but a celebration of teamwork and youth development. Camaicolo expressed hope that the best players from this tournament will progress to represent their province at the national level, further showcasing the depth of talent in grassroots rugby in Fiji. As children demonstrated their skills on the field, the event confirmed that the spirit of rugby is vibrant and alive in the community.
This initiative echoes similar sentiments observed in other local rugby events, such as the Fiji Bitter Nahehevia 7s competition and grassroots clinics conducted by the Rugby Academy of Fiji, highlighting a collective effort to bolster rugby’s future in the region.
Overall, this tournament not only focuses on competitive performance but also emphasizes the importance of fostering a love for the sport among the youth, ensuring a bright future for rugby in Fiji.
