Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) is currently in discussions to host an international rugby Test match in Fiji on October 10, 2025, coinciding with the Fiji Day celebrations. This match aims to serve as a preparatory event for the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. FNRL head coach Wise Kativerata confirmed that conversations are underway with two nations to finalize details for the match.

Reflecting on recent successes, Kativerata highlighted the positive impact of the pre-season National Rugby League (NRL) game between the Newcastle Knights and the Melbourne Storm, which took place at Lautoka’s Churchill Park on February 24. Additionally, he mentioned the successful hosting of the Pacific Bowl Championship in Suva, which significantly boosted local rugby engagement.

Looking ahead to 2025, Kativerata emphasized plans to establish an academy for players aged 14 to 18 across Fiji in the coming year. He noted the importance of nurturing talent from schools and various islands, including Vanua Levu, to create a robust training pathway. The coach is particularly focused on the development of players in the under-19 to 23 category, aiming to change their mindset and prepare them for future challenges, especially with the 2028 goals in sight.

In another noteworthy development, Kativerata mentioned that former West Tigers halfback Brandon Wakeham is still eligible to join the Fiji Bati squad after drug charges against him were dropped. Following Wakeham’s release from legal troubles, Kativerata expressed interest in considering his performance in high-level competitions as a potential asset for the team, particularly with an eye on the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

Overall, these developments reflect a period of growth and opportunity for rugby in Fiji, illustrating a commitment to strengthening the sport at all levels and working towards international competitions.

In summary, FNRL is on track to host an exciting match in 2025 while actively developing future talent through academies and fostering young players’ careers. This proactive approach underscores a hopeful vision for the growth of rugby in Fiji and its competitive edge on the international stage.
