Eroni Sarasau, a dedicated young rugby player, has no regrets about prioritizing his sporting career over academics. At just 19 years old, this tight head prop made the significant decision to represent Fiji in the Under-20 national squad instead of enrolling in university. Originating from Lomati, Nabukelevu in Kadavu, Sarasau has strong connections to Rotuma through his maternal lineage.

Reflecting on his choice, Sarasau shared, “I was supposed to join the university, but we had tour commitments this year, so I decided to focus on rugby.” He acknowledged the difficulty of balancing education and athleticism, ultimately choosing to dedicate himself to the sport he loves.

Having been a member of the Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Unit for three years, Sarasau currently plays for the Naitasiri Under-20 team. With an eye on the future, he aims to achieve significant milestones in 2025, expressing his desire to help his team make history next year. He is inspired by his uncle, Etonia Waqa, a professional rugby player from the same village, and hopes to follow in his footsteps.

Sarasau emphasizes the importance of mastering the fundamentals in his position, stating, “Individually, you have to know all your skills and techniques to excel.” He admires fellow player Mesake Doge for his unique footwork and approach.

His experience in the High Performance Unit has provided Sarasau with valuable insights into transitioning from high school rugby to provincial levels. “At the national level, you have a big shoe to fill, so mental and physical preparation is crucial,” he explained. He began playing for Naitasiri at the age of 16 and aspires to join the senior team next year.

Sarasau credits the unwavering support from his parents and grandparents in Kadavu, who have been a part of his journey since he started playing rugby at the age of eight. He spent significant time with his grandparents in the village, allowing him to adapt to a rural lifestyle before pursuing his secondary education at Ratu Kadavulevu School.

This story illustrates the determination of young athletes who make sacrifices to achieve their dreams. With a clear focus and support from family, Sarasau is poised to make a meaningful impact in the rugby world while also aspiring to complete his education in the future. His journey serves as an inspiration for others who are navigating similar decisions between academics and sports.
