Eroni Sarasau, a promising 19-year-old rugby player, expresses no regrets about choosing to pursue rugby over higher education. The tight-head prop, who hails from the Lomati area of Nabukelevu in Kadavu, has represented Fiji in the national Under-20 squad and has his sights set on achieving great things in 2025.
Initially poised to enter university, Sarasau decided to join the national team for tours instead. “It was a difficult decision to make because juggling both education and rugby is quite challenging,” he remarked, “so I chose rugby.” He has been part of the Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Unit for the past three years and currently plays for the Naitasiri Under-20 team.
Sarasau aspires to make an impact in the upcoming year, aiming to create history with his team. He hopes to emulate the success of his uncle, Etonia Waqa, by securing a professional rugby contract. He stresses the importance of mastering the basics in his position and admires fellow prop Mesake Doge for his unique skills.
Throughout his time in the High Performance Unit, Sarasau has learned valuable lessons about the transition from high school to provincial and national rugby. He acknowledges that moving to the national level comes with significant expectations and the need for mental and physical preparation.
Having started his rugby journey at the age of eight, he credits his family’s support throughout his development, particularly highlighting the influence of his parents and grandparents in Kadavu. They have been a constant presence in his life, encouraging his growth both as a player and a person.
