Eroni Sarasau, a 19-year-old tight head prop, has opted to prioritize his rugby career over academic pursuits, a decision he does not regret. Representing Fiji in the national Under-20 squad, Sarasau hails from Lomati, Nabukelevu, in Kadavu and wishes to make a significant impact in the sport by 2025. He also has familial ties to Rotuma.
Sarasau, a former student of Marist Brothers High School, explained that while he was on track to enroll in university, he chose to partake in rugby tours this year instead. He recognized the challenge of balancing education with sports commitments and ultimately decided to focus on rugby.
Having been a part of the Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Unit for the past three years, Sarasau is also a player for the Naitasiri Under-20 side. He aims to achieve what he could not this year and create history with his team in 2025.
Inspired by his uncle Etonia Waqa, who has secured a professional rugby contract, Sarasau aspires to do the same and emphasizes the importance of mastering the fundamentals of his position. He admires Mesake Doge for his unique playing style and acknowledges how being part of the High Performance Unit has greatly enhanced his understanding of the game.
Transitioning from high school to provincial rugby has been a learning experience for Sarasau, who noted the heightened expectations at the national level. He began playing rugby for Naitasiri at the young age of 16 and aims to join the senior team next year when he turns 20.
Sarasau credits his support system, particularly his parents and grandparents in Kadavu, for their unwavering encouragement throughout his rugby journey, which started when he was just eight years old. He completed his primary education in Kadavu before continuing at Ratu Kadavulevu School.
This story reflects the determination and aspiration of young athletes like Sarasau, who are committed to pursuing their sporting dreams while balancing personal and cultural responsibilities. His journey highlights the importance of support from family and mentors as he navigates the challenges of professional sports.
In summary, Eroni Sarasau’s dedication to rugby exemplifies the passion and commitment of young athletes striving for excellence in their sport, hoping to create a legacy in the coming years.
