Eroni Sarasau has no regrets about putting his studies on hold to pursue a career in rugby. At just 19, the tight head prop is proudly representing his country as part of the national Under-20 squad. Hailing from Lomati, Nabukelevu, Kadavu, and with maternal roots in Rotuma, Sarasau is determined to achieve his goals by 2025.
Initially slated to attend university, Sarasau opted instead to join his team for tours this year, recognizing the difficult balance between education and a rugby career. “It’s a tough decision to make because juggling both education and rugby is a bit tight, so I chose rugby,” he remarked, demonstrating both his commitment and passion for the sport.
For the past three years, Sarasau has been a member of the Fiji Rugby Union High-Performance Unit and plays for the Naitasiri Under-20 side. He aims to make a significant impact in 2025, hoping to help his team create history. Inspired by family, he looks up to his uncle Etonia Waqa and shares a vision of securing a professional rugby contract.
Sarasau underscores the importance of mastering the basics in his position, stating that understanding techniques is crucial to dominating the game. He admires fellow prop Mesake Doge for his unique footwork and attributes his growth to the experiences gained while transitioning from high school to provincial rugby.
Having started his rugby journey at age eight, he values the unwavering support of his parents and grandparents in Kadavu, who have been with him every step of the way. After completing primary school in Kadavu, he moved on to Ratu Kadavulevu School in Year 9, ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
Sarasau’s story reflects a blend of determination and aspiration, highlighting the sacrifices young athletes often make to follow their dreams. As he continues his journey in rugby, he remains focused, committed, and supported by a strong family foundation, paving the way for a promising future.
