Eroni Sarasau, a 19-year-old tight head prop, has no regrets about choosing to forgo his studies in pursuit of a rugby career. As a member of Fiji’s national Under-20 squad, he has prioritized his passion for the sport, even at the expense of his education.
Sarasau hails from Lomati, Nabukelevu, Kadavu, and has ambitious plans for 2025. He expressed his dedication to making a significant impact in the rugby world, aiming to achieve goals that were unattainable this year. “We want to create history next year with the team,” he stated.
Reflecting on his decision, the former Marist Brothers High School student noted the challenges of balancing education and rugby. He emphasized that he had to choose between the two, ultimately deciding to focus on his rugby career. “It’s a tough decision to make, but I chose rugby,” Sarasau explained.
With three years as part of the Fiji Rugby Union High Performance Unit, he is also a player for the Naitasiri Under-20 team. Looking ahead, he hopes to follow in the footsteps of his uncle, Etonia Waqa, by securing a professional rugby contract. He believes mastering the basics of his position is the key to success.
Sarasau admires fellow player Mesake Doge for his unique skills, stating, “He’s different.” His time in the High Performance Unit has significantly enhanced his understanding of the game, particularly the transition from high school to provincial rugby. He acknowledges that playing at the national level presents bigger challenges, requiring both mental and physical preparation.
Beginning his rugby journey at just eight years old, Sarasau has credited his supportive family, especially his parents and grandparents from Kadavu, for his success. He completed his primary education in Kadavu before moving to Ratu Kadavulevu School in Year 9.
Sarasau’s determination and commitment to his goals serve as an inspiring reminder of how passion and hard work can lead to greatness in sports. With hopes pinned on the future achievements of his team, he is excited about what lies ahead.
