Rugby Dreams Come True: Penaia Cakobau Joins Flying Fijians

Emerging rugby talent Penaia Cakobau has been selected to join the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they aim to reclaim the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This opportunity marks a significant moment for Cakobau, fulfilling his dream of donning the national jersey and competing alongside some of Fiji’s top rugby players.

At 30, Cakobau’s journey in rugby began at Queen Victoria School, where he was a member of the team that clinched the esteemed Vodafone Under-18 Deans Trophy in 2011. After establishing himself in local competitions, he took his rugby career overseas, playing in France and subsequently with New Zealand’s North Harbor development team.

In 2018, he returned to Fiji to join Suva’s Skipper Cup team, where he played for three years before returning to New Zealand at the close of 2022. Cakobau is now dedicated to honing his skills as a professional rugby player, with the goal of obtaining a Super Rugby contract.

“When I received the call, I felt both excited and like it was surreal,” Cakobau shared. “At one point, I didn’t expect to get this chance, but now it serves as a new benchmark for me. I understand the need to work hard to keep my position in this environment.”

Being part of the Flying Fijians allows Cakobau the opportunity to learn from leading players such as Captain Tevita Ikanivere and Mesulame Dolokoto. He is set to take on a role that was previously held by Kavaia Tagivetaua, and he’s determined to make an impact on the field.

“Every rugby player has objectives they want to achieve,” Cakobau noted. “You write them down, motivate yourself, and train hard, especially during the times when no one is watching. Anything can happen if you’re prepared to make the necessary sacrifices.”
