Seventeen-year-old Jone Raibevu is taking significant strides in his rugby career as he aims to follow in the footsteps of his idol, Fijian Drua flyhalf Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula. Famous for his remarkable 57-meter penalty kick during the Fiji Secondary School Rugby Eastern Zone final, Raibevu has been selected to join the Fijian Drua Academy, where he will receive specialized training over the next three years.
After an impressive performance in a recent match where the Drua Academy triumphed 40-17 against the Melbourne Brothers Club, Raibevu’s dreams of donning the same jersey number as his hero feel increasingly attainable. He expressed, “My favorite Drua player is Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula. I always look forward to watching him play; he motivates me to work hard and aspire to wear the same jersey.”
Raibevu, currently a Year 12 student at Queen Victoria School, shared his excitement about this opportunity, describing joining the Drua Academy as a dream come true. “I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would come this far in my passion for rugby,” he remarked, reflecting on how this journey has surpassed his expectations.
As he prepares for the upcoming Deans competition, Raibevu is committed to refining his skills, particularly his kicking, while striving to contribute to his school’s under-18 side in defending their title. He encourages fellow aspiring rugby players to set clear goals and diligently pursue their ambitions, demonstrating the belief that dedication can lead to great achievements.
Raibevu’s journey is not just a personal success story; it symbolizes the growing opportunities for young athletes in Fiji. His determination and hard work serve as an inspiring reminder for other youth in sports that with passion and persistence, dreams can become a reality.
