Rising rugby talent Penaia Cakobau has been selected to join the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they aim to reclaim the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This opportunity fulfills his dream of donning the white jersey and competing alongside some of Fiji’s top rugby players.
At 30 years old, Cakobau’s rugby journey began at Queen Victoria School, where he was part of the victorious team that claimed the Vodafone Under-18 Deans Trophy in 2011. After establishing his reputation locally, he expanded his career overseas, playing in France and later with the North Harbor development team in New Zealand.
In 2018, he made his return to Fiji to join Suva’s Skipper Cup team, where he played for three years before heading back to New Zealand at the end of 2022. Cakobau is now dedicated to further enhancing his skills as a professional rugby player, with aspirations of securing a Super Rugby contract.
“When I received the call, I was both excited and it felt surreal,” Cakobau shared. “At one point, I didn’t think I would get this opportunity, but now it’s a new benchmark for me. I need to work hard to maintain my place in this environment.”
Joining the Flying Fijians provides Cakobau with the chance to learn from esteemed players such as Captain Tevita Ikanivere and Mesulame Dolokoto. He is stepping into a position previously held by Kavaia Tagivetaua and is keen to demonstrate his abilities on the field.
“Every rugby player has a list of things they want to accomplish,” Cakobau explained. “You write them down, motivate yourself, and train hard, especially when no one’s looking. Anything is possible if you’re willing to make the sacrifices.”
