Asilika Rinieta Qalo is set to make her mark in the sports arena by representing the Fiji Airways Fiji women’s 7s team. The 22-year-old, hailing from Nadogo, Saqani, and with maternal ties to Nakobo in Cakaudrove, is one of the uncapped players striving for a place in the squad for the upcoming Dubai 7s next weekend.
Qalo described her journey to the national extended squad as a challenging endeavor. She began her rugby career just two years ago with the Police rugby team, subsequently joining the Nasinu club. Expressing her gratitude, Qalo stated, “I thank God for this Fijiana 7s selection.” She acknowledged that wearing the national colors has long been a dream, although the path has not been straightforward. The rigorous daily training in a high-performance environment, coupled with early morning practices, posed difficulties, but her support network has been instrumental in motivating her to persevere.
Reflecting on her experience, Qalo mentioned the encouragement she received: “A lot of people have motivated and advised me to humble myself.” Surprised by her inclusion in the squad, she affirmed her readiness to represent Fiji on the international stage.
In addition to her rugby commitments, Qalo attended Nabua Secondary School and also plays club netball. The Fijiana 7s team is set to depart this weekend for Dubai, where they will compete in Pool A against formidable teams such as Australia, Ireland, and China.
In this burgeoning chapter of her life, Qalo’s story is an inspiring reminder of how dedication and support can lead to incredible opportunities. Her journey highlights the importance of perseverance and resilience in pursuing one’s dreams, and fans can look forward to cheering for her and the Fijiana 7s team as they compete in Dubai.
