Emerging rugby talent Penaia Cakobau has been selected to join the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they aim to win back the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This marks a significant milestone in his career, allowing him to fulfill his dream of donning the national team’s white jersey and competing alongside some of the nation’s finest rugby players.
At 30 years old, Cakobau’s rugby journey began at Queen Victoria School, where he was part of the victorious team in the 2011 Vodafone Under-18 Deans Trophy. After establishing himself in local competitions, he took his skills overseas, playing in France and subsequently with New Zealand’s North Harbor development team.
In 2018, Cakobau returned to Fiji to compete for Suva’s Skipper Cup team for three years before moving back to New Zealand at the close of 2022. He is now dedicated to honing his abilities as a professional rugby player, with the goal of obtaining a Super Rugby contract.
“When I received the call, I was both excited and it felt surreal,” Cakobau shared. “At one point, I didn’t think I would get this opportunity, but now it’s a new benchmark for me. I need to work hard to maintain my place in this environment.”
Being part of the Flying Fijians presents Cakobau with the chance to learn from seasoned players such as Captain Tevita Ikanivere and Mesulame Dolokoto. Taking on the position that was once held by Kavaia Tagivetaua, he is eager to demonstrate his skills on the field.
“Every rugby player has a list of things they want to accomplish,” he explained. “You write them down, motivate yourself, and train hard, especially when no one’s looking. Anything is possible if you’re willing to make the sacrifices.”
