Rugby Crisis in Fiji: Calls for Government Intervention

Peceli Rinakama, the president of the Naitasiri Rugby Union, has voiced his concerns regarding the ongoing dispute between the Fiji Rugby Union and senior players of the Flying Fijians. In an interview, Rinakama discussed allegations from team captain Waisea Nayacalevu and other players about unpaid contracts, unmet commitments, and outstanding payments to coaches and officials.

“I am really unhappy to hear and to learn that the Fiji players were not properly paid by the FRU,” he said. Rinakama called for government intervention to address the situation, emphasizing that it is time for the Prime Minister, the Minister for Sports, and the Government to get involved due to their critical role in rugby operations in Fiji.

He stressed the importance of this involvement, noting rugby’s significance in enhancing Fiji’s global reputation. Rinakama mentioned that he personally requested the Prime Minister to intervene in the FRU’s affairs, as rugby is a national sport that has put Fiji on the world stage.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated that any allegations related to misappropriation of funds should be presented at the FRU’s Annual General Meeting for further investigation. He emphasized that the Government prefers not to interfere in FRU matters, respecting the organization’s decision to operate independently.

Rinakama expressed concern that the current situation might discourage future players from pursuing national team positions, noting that rugby has evolved from a source of entertainment to a vital livelihood for many players, both internationally and locally.

In light of this, he urged all rugby unions to collaborate in preparation for the FRU Annual General Meeting scheduled for November.
