Former Fiji 7s head coach Ben Gollings has urged for an immediate restructuring of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), stressing the need for leaders with a profound understanding of sports to manage its operations effectively. His remarks follow ongoing disputes between the FRU and its players, which have negatively impacted the organization’s performance and reputation.
Gollings pointed out that it is essential for the FRU to have leaders who comprehend the intricacies of athletic performance, both in games and in administrative tasks. “FRU requires individuals who grasp the essence of sports, not merely from a commercial angle, but through the perspective of players and their performance,” he stated.
He noted that Fiji is a rugby-loving nation, with devoted fans supporting the sport at every level, but he believes that this passion needs to extend to the governance of the FRU.
“There are countless passionate individuals in Fiji who adore rugby, but that same enthusiasm and insight must also be present in the operational management,” Gollings remarked.
A critical issue he identified is the need for greater transparency within the union. Gollings argued that complete transparency is vital for maintaining the integrity of the FRU and rebuilding trust between the players and the leadership.
Furthermore, he advocated for the establishment of a dedicated player representative in the decision-making processes at Rugby House. “Players need a presence in discussions. A player representative should be appointed to relay athletes’ concerns directly to the union’s management,” he emphasized, asserting that the welfare and interests of players need to be at the forefront of the FRU’s strategies.
Gollings’ comments reflect rising apprehensions within the rugby community regarding the FRU’s current trajectory, especially given its recent struggles with player relationships.
Support for Gollings’ proposal was echoed by Suva Rugby Union secretary Nemani Tuifagalele, who backed the idea of forming a players’ organization. “With a players’ union, numerous objectives can be achieved,” he stated.
Their call for a leadership reform and increased transparency resonates with many who believe that the FRU must adapt to secure Fiji’s ongoing success on the global rugby stage. Recently, senior players Waisea Nayacalevu, Levani Botia, and Semi Radradra highlighted these issues, bringing further attention to Gollings’ concerns regarding the FRU’s direction amidst its ongoing challenges with player relations.
