Peceli Rinakama, the president of the Naitasiri Rugby Union, has voiced his concerns regarding the ongoing issues between the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and senior players of the Flying Fijians. In an interview with The Fiji Times, Rinakama addressed allegations made by the Flying Fijians captain Waisea Nayacalevu and others about unpaid contracts and promises, as well as outstanding payments to coaches and officials.
Rinakama expressed his disappointment at the situation, stating, “I am really unhappy to hear and to learn that the Fiji players were not properly paid by the FRU.” He called for the Government’s involvement in resolving this ongoing conflict, emphasizing that the Prime Minister, the Minister for Sports, and the Government play crucial roles in rugby’s operation in Fiji.
He highlighted the importance of government intervention, citing rugby’s significance in promoting Fiji on the global stage. Rinakama personally requested the Prime Minister’s intervention, noting that rugby is a national sport that has helped elevate Fiji’s international profile.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated that any allegations of financial misconduct should be addressed at the FRU’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) for further investigation. He indicated that the Government would respect the FRU’s preference for no government involvement in its operations. Rinakama expressed concern that the current turmoil might discourage potential players from aspiring to join the national team.
“Before we used to play rugby for entertainment, but not now,” he remarked. “It is a means of living for players overseas and likewise for players who are in the local clubs right now.”
Additionally, Rinakama called upon all rugby unions to collaborate in preparation for the upcoming FRU Annual General Meeting scheduled for November.
