Rugby Crisis: Calls for Government Intervention Spark Controversy in Fiji

Peceli Rinakama, president of the Naitasiri Rugby Union, has voiced his concerns regarding the ongoing issues between the Fiji Rugby Union and senior players of the Flying Fijians. In an interview with The Fiji Times, Rinakama commented on the claims made by team captain Waisea Nayacalevu and other players about unpaid contracts, broken promises, and outstanding payments to coaches and officials.

Rinakama expressed his disappointment over the financial treatment of the players, stating, “I am really unhappy to hear and to learn that the Fiji players were not properly paid by the FRU.” He has called for government intervention in this matter, emphasizing the importance of involvement from the Prime Minister, the Minister for Sports, and the government for the welfare of rugby in Fiji.

He explained that their participation is crucial due to rugby’s significant role in enhancing Fiji’s international standing. Rinakama also personally requested the Prime Minister to intervene, highlighting that rugby is a national sport that has brought Fiji into the global spotlight.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka suggested that any allegations of financial misconduct should be addressed at the FRU’s Annual General Meeting and recommended an investigation. He noted that the government would refrain from interfering, respecting the FRU’s stance against governmental involvement.

Rinakama cautioned that the current situation could discourage future talent from pursuing a place in the national team, stating, “Before we used to play rugby for entertainment, but not now. It is a means of living for players overseas and likewise for players who are in the (local) clubs right now.” He also urged all rugby unions to collaborate in preparation for the FRU Annual General Meeting scheduled for November.
