Vatulele, an island off the Coral Coast of Fiji’s Viti Levu, is renowned for its unique red prawns and vibrant iTaukei culture, characterized by intricate masi designs. Recently, the island hosted the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s, a two-day rugby tournament held from December 19 to 20 at the Vatulele District School ground in the village of Ekubu. This event, now in its third year at home, provided a lively opportunity for locals to enjoy top-notch rugby while raising funds for community projects, including a new walkway for the district school.

The tournament was initiated by two Ekubu villagers, Vilive Qionikorolevu and Asesela Naborisi, who aimed to give back to their community. Qionikorolevu acted as the director while Naborisi served as the treasurer, showcasing a strong commitment to community service. After a challenging boat ride to the island, the Fiji Times team arrived to warm welcomes and renowned Fijian hospitality, further enriching their experience during the event.

Competition kicked off on Thursday morning, with some teams absent due to various reasons, which led to automatic victories for other groups. Despite that, the games proceeded with determination and resilience from all teams vying for the championship. Notably, the TEMC Warriors triumphed in the cup finals, demonstrating impressive skill and teamwork, while other categories also saw interesting matchups culminating in triumphant victories for various teams.

Reflecting on the experience, the Fiji Times team appreciated the island’s slow-paced life and the warmth of local families who offered them hospitality during their stay. The tournament not only fostered sportsmanship but also strengthened community bonds, with a future commitment for the event scheduled for August next year underscoring the importance of unity and support among the villagers.

As they departed Vatulele, the team left with fond memories and the valuable realization of the beauty in simplicity, connection, and the communal spirit that characterizes life on the island. This event served as a reminder that collaborative efforts can yield wonderful results for both community and culture.
