Sports serves as a remarkable connector, fostering community and shared passions among individuals. For Yuji Horiguchi, a native of Japan, his journey on the rugby field in Fiji has been nothing short of transformative.
Mr. Horiguchi first set foot in Fiji as a tourist in 2019, but soon decided to become a volunteer with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Currently, he dedicates his time as a volunteer rugby coach at the Ba Provincial Freebird Institute in Lautoka.
Originally from Chiba, Japan, Horiguchi’s coaching career in rugby came about after he could no longer play due to an old injury. A lifelong rugby enthusiast, he had played the sport since childhood, participating in rugby league as a flanker, while also nurturing dreams of working abroad.
As a JICA volunteer, he has embraced the opportunity to coach young players, motivated by a desire to ensure they continue their passion for rugby, irrespective of any potential injuries. Horiguchi emphasizes the importance of imparting the right skills and knowledge, aiming not just to teach rugby techniques but also to instill a sense of enjoyment and discipline in the sport, on and off the field.
His coaching philosophy extends beyond athletic development; he strives to share valuable life lessons with the boys he trains. Horiguchi feels a deep connection to Fiji, stating he has never felt more at home, considering his time there one of the most significant in his life. He has immersed himself in local culture and language and is determined to advance his coaching credentials, aspiring to obtain a World Rugby Level Three license.
With nearly a year of commitment to his role in Fiji, Horiguchi’s enthusiasm only continues to grow. He embraces the belief that “no pain, no gain,” recognizing that life’s journey is filled with both ups and downs, and emphasizes the importance of resilience and acceptance in overcoming challenges.
