A rugby club in Labasa is working to provide its players with more than just on-field opportunities. The Bokobuka team from the National Fire Authority is dedicated to assisting its players in securing employment and overseas playing contracts.
Coach Viliame Maiono shared that the club’s initiative aims to support players as they develop their careers both in rugby and in other fields. So far, one player has successfully joined a club in Australia, while eight players have found jobs as auxiliary staff members with the National Fire Authority.
Mr. Maiono highlighted that this initiative not only aids the players but also fosters community development by showcasing sports as a viable path to success. “Many of the boys were previously unemployed, and now rugby has opened doors to job opportunities for them,” he noted.
This approach has additionally helped address the issue of player availability during matches, as fire officers are sometimes unable to participate due to work commitments on Saturdays.
The positive impact of such initiatives underscores the crucial role sports can play in fostering both professional and personal growth for individuals in the community. The story encapsulates how sports can be a driving force for change and opportunity, reinforcing the belief that with the right support and dedication, players can carve out successful futures both on and off the field.
