Safeguarding in sports is increasingly becoming a critical focus, as emphasized by Tirani Uluinakauvadra, Participation and Pathway Manager of Oceania Rugby. Following the TEAM UP Regional Safeguarding Workshop held at the Tanoa International Hotel, Uluinakauvadra called for protective measures to prevent abuse and foster safer environments in rugby and other sports.
He noted that while the enjoyment of sports often takes precedence, the alarming prevalence of abuse necessitates a proactive approach. “Safeguarding tends to take a backseat because we are often focused on the game itself. However, we owe it to our participants to be preemptive rather than reactive,” he stated.
Uluinakauvadra underscored the crucial role of education and awareness in combating abuse, highlighting the lack of understanding of available support systems. “Abuse does occur in sports, and the real issue lies in the insufficient awareness about the resources that individuals can access in their own countries. There is substantial work to be done to rectify this,” he pointed out.
When discussing the responsibility of sports administrators, he reiterated the necessity for leadership at the governance level to champion safeguarding efforts. “Change is more likely to succeed when it originates from those in charge. It’s vital for leaders in governance and administration to grasp the significance of fostering a secure atmosphere for all participants in sports,” he explained.
The workshop served as a platform for athletes and sports administrators in the region to explore strategies for enhancing safeguarding measures. Uluinakauvadra’s comments reflect Oceania Rugby’s commitment to addressing these challenges directly, reinforcing the organization’s dedication to ensuring sports environments are safe and supportive for everyone involved.
This initiative showcases a positive movement toward creating a culture of safety and accountability in sports, where all participants can thrive without fear of abuse. By prioritizing education and leadership, Oceania Rugby is setting a strong precedent for other sporting organizations to follow.
