The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) is advocating for immediate mandatory gender sensitization training for all rugby players and associated personnel in Fiji amid a concerning reported assault involving Fijian Drua centre Iosefo Masi. The organization’s coordinator, Shamima Ali, notes that such incidents are symptomatic of a deeper issue regarding gender-based violence that requires a structured and ongoing training approach at every level of rugby in the country.
Ali characterized the situation as “tragic,” underlining how it not only affects individuals but also families and the broader reputation of Fiji as a sports nation. She emphasized the crucial role of rugby players as role models for youth, pointing out that their behaviors ought to reflect responsibility and respect.
In her remarks, Ali stressed that gender-based violence is a serious issue that not only harms victims but can also adversely impact players’ careers and the future of the sport in Fiji. “Players require education on the effects of domestic violence and an understanding of the law,” she explained, insisting that the consequences of such behavior extend beyond the immediate incident.
