Fijian rugby legend Waisale Serevi is passionately dedicated to transforming the lives of young people in Fiji through his Aqua Pacific Serevi Academy of Rugby. At a recent rugby camp held at Lawaqa Park, he spoke about using the sport as a powerful tool for inspiring youth to pursue meaningful goals, stay away from harmful substances, and make positive life choices.
Serevi stated, “For me, rugby is more than a sport; it’s a vehicle for change.” Recognizing the significant challenges faced by today’s youth, including substance abuse, he expressed his desire to actively guide them rather than remain passive. Reflecting on pivotal moments in his life, he recounted how his dream of being a rugby player ignited at just nine years old after witnessing Fiji’s historic victory over the British Lions in 1977. This experience set him on a path that eventually led him to represent Fiji for 21 years, including participating in seven World Cups.
Emphasizing the importance of setting achievable daily goals, Serevi shared, “Wake up early, clean your bed, go to school on time, and train hard. These small goals build discipline, patience, and perseverance.” He believes that these traits are crucial not only in sports but also in life, helping individuals navigate both challenges and ambitions.
While Serevi’s academy focuses on developing rugby skills, its overarching mission is to nurture character and integrity in each participant. “My philosophy is to create the best rugby players in the world, but more importantly, good people,” he clarified, underscoring that character will outlast any trophies or awards.
Central to the academy’s mission is the theme “Stay Strong, Say No to Drugs,” which reflects Serevi’s belief that making constructive choices is essential in building resilience against negative influences. He also shared how his faith plays an integral role in his journey, citing Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength,” as a guiding principle he wishes to pass on to the young athletes he mentors.
The initiatives led by Serevi and his academy not only promote athleticism but also aim to provide a supportive environment that fosters both personal growth and resilience among Fiji’s youth. Serevi’s commitment to guiding young people serves as a hopeful beacon for the future, illustrating that with mentorship and the right tools, they can overcome challenges and set their sights on a brighter tomorrow.
Overall, Serevi’s work with the Aqua Pacific Serevi Academy embodies the spirit of community development and personal empowerment through sports, offering a positive pathway for the next generation of Fijian youth.
