Rubbish Woes: Who’s Responsible for Suva’s Dirty Streets?

Concerns have been raised by individuals working near the Fiji Club in Suva regarding the accumulation of trash outside the establishment, which is reportedly not being collected by the Suva City Council.

Vilimone Ratulevu, a security officer at the former Ministry of Education Examinations and Assessments building, mentioned that he has observed the Suva City Council picking up rubbish from bins and cartons but neglecting to address litter on the ground.

“I see many people visit this club, and it doesn’t present a good image when rubbish is left piled outside,” Mr. Ratulevu stated. He expressed frustration that during rubbish collection, SCC workers only tend to the items inside the bins or cartons, while ignoring empty alcohol bottles that remain scattered around when the carton is full.

Mr. Ratulevu noted that businesses like the Fiji Club should be more cautious about how they dispose of waste, as “not all rubbish goes into the rubbish truck.”

Conversely, Fiji Club member Neil Shivam argued that waste from the club is always disposed of correctly. He attributed some of the mess to individuals seeking free parking who park along the roadside, inadvertently knocking over garbage that is meant for collection.

“Rubbish is placed properly, but there are people who try to find free parking every week,” Mr. Shivam commented. “Once parked, the street becomes too narrow for more than one car to pass, resulting in other vehicles hitting the rubbish piled for collection.”
