Concerns have emerged from individuals working near the Fiji Club in Suva regarding the accumulation of litter outside the venue, which remains unaddressed by the Suva City Council.
Vilimone Ratulevu, who works as a security officer at the former Ministry of Education Examinations and Assessments building, noted that while he has seen the council collect waste from bins and cartons, they often overlook litter on the ground.
“There’s a lot of foot traffic to this club and it doesn’t make a good impression when rubbish piles up outside,” Mr. Ratulevu stated. He added, “The frustrating part is that when the SCC comes for garbage collection, the workers only take what is in the bins or cartons. Empty alcohol bottles that are scattered around when a carton is full are simply left behind.”
Mr. Ratulevu further emphasized that establishments like the Fiji Club should be cautious about how they manage their waste since “not all rubbish gets picked up by the rubbish truck.”
In contrast, Fiji Club member Neil Shivam mentioned that the club has consistently disposed of its waste appropriately. He highlighted that some individuals looking for free parking tend to park on the roadside, causing disruption to garbage collection.
“Waste is placed out correctly, but there are people every week who try to find free parking,” Mr. Shivam explained. “After parking, the street becomes so narrow that only one car can pass, resulting in many vehicles hitting the rubbish set out for collection.”
