Rubbish Trouble: Suva Residents Frustrated by Collection Delays

The Suva City Council (SCC) is currently facing challenges in waste management due to a shortage of rubbish trucks, according to executive chairperson Tevita Boseiwaqa. This issue has led to delays in waste collection schedules, prompting complaints from Bayview Heights residents regarding unpleasant odors from accumulated trash at the roadside.

Residents like Jotame Baleiwai have voiced their frustrations with the SCC’s lack of timely rubbish collection. He mentioned that despite their efforts to reach out to the council, larger piles of rubbish have remained uncleared for days, leading to a buildup of waste and an increasingly foul smell. Losana Raikibeqa, another resident, expressed deep concern over the health risks associated with the rubbish near her home, noting that the unsightly refuse attracts pests such as flies and rodents.

Raikibeqa described how the situation worsens during rainy weather, further compounding their discomfort and health issues as her family has experienced illnesses likely linked to the garbage’s proximity. Other residents have reported that outsiders have begun using the area as a dumping ground, exacerbating the problem.

In response to the residents’ grievances, Mr. Boseiwaqa acknowledged the ongoing issues and stated that the council is actively seeking alternative solutions to enhance waste collection services. He mentioned that the SCC has had to hire additional garbage trucks at significant costs, with each trip amounting to approximately $500. Furthermore, he pointed out that part of the challenge stems from residents being unaware of waste collection schedules and not taking responsibility for proper waste disposal.

Amid these difficulties, there remains hope for improvement as the council explores solutions to enhance communication with residents and encourage community participation in maintaining cleanliness. By addressing these concerns, both the Suva City Council and local residents can work together towards a healthier and cleaner living environment.

In summary, the SCC is tackling a waste collection crisis due to truck shortages, prompting residents to voice their discontent over the unsanitary conditions. However, solutions are being sought to improve the situation, and community involvement is essential to achieve lasting results.
