The Suva City Council is facing challenges in waste collection due to a shortage of rubbish trucks, according to executive chairperson Tevita Boseiwaqa. This problem has led to complaints from residents of Bayview Heights, who express their frustration over the foul odors emanating from uncollected piles of rubbish left at the roadside.

Bayview Heights resident Jotame Baleiwai highlighted the council’s lack of communication regarding the missed collection schedule, stating, “The sight and smell are frustrating.” He noted that residents have reached out to the council but found that only regular kitchen waste has been collected, while larger heaps of rubbish have been left unattended for several days.

Another local resident, Losana Raikibeqa, voiced her concern about the health risks posed by the accumulating rubbish. She reported that the unpleasant stench has drawn various pests into her home, complicating her family’s well-being. “The smell gets worse on rainy days,” she lamented, noting that her grandchildren frequently walk past the rubbish on their way to school and have fallen ill.

Some residents, choosing to remain anonymous, have also pointed out that people from outside Bayview Heights have contributed to the problem by dumping their waste in the area.

In response to the situation, Mr. Boseiwaqa acknowledged the difficulties facing residents and stated that the council is actively exploring solutions to improve waste collection services. With an increased need for service, the council has resorted to hiring additional garbage trucks, incurring costs upwards of $2000 daily for multiple trips.

He emphasized the importance of residents being informed about collection schedules and taking responsibility for maintaining cleanliness in their neighborhoods. Despite the current challenges, Mr. Boseiwaqa remains optimistic, believing that with enhanced community awareness and effective management, the situation can improve for everyone involved.

In light of these resolutions, it’s crucial for the community to engage proactively with the council and follow guidelines to manage waste responsibly. This will not only ensure a cleaner environment but also promote better public health for all residents.
