Ratu Simione Matanitobua College (RSMC) is set to make its debut in the national quarter-finals of the Vodafone Deans competition next week, a remarkable achievement for the school founded just five years ago. The team secured their place after finishing as runners-up in the Southern Zone competition, despite a tough 14-27 loss to Nasinu Secondary School in the under-19 final held in Laucala Bay, Suva.
Team captain Ratu Samuela Korodrau praised his teammates for their effort against a seasoned Nasinu side, acknowledging the team’s extensive preparation leading up to the match. “Even though it was a tough game, we would like to acknowledge the Lord for each of our lives,” Korodrau stated, indicating the team’s strong spirit and unity.
During the intense match, RSMC found themselves trailing at halftime but showed resilience, tightening their grip to contest the second half effectively. Korodrau reflected on the halftime adjustments that rejuvenated the team’s game plan, suggesting that this adaptability will be crucial as they prepare for the quarter-finals.
This competition marks a significant moment for RSMC, as they have worked diligently to enhance their performance since entering the Southern Zone Deans competition. Their advancement to the national quarter-finals illustrates the growth of the school’s rugby program, echoing sentiments from similar stories like Nasinu Secondary School, which reached the same stage for the first time in 12 years. Both teams exemplify the hard work, dedication, and community support surrounding youth rugby in the region.
As RSMC gears up for their upcoming match, the atmosphere of anticipation and pride is palpable, giving the team hope that they can push further in the competition and inspire pride in their school and community.
