The 2025 Rotuma Youth Festival, which came to a close on August 28, marked a significant push by the Fiji government to bolster youth development and community growth on the island of Rotuma. Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, unveiled several new initiatives, including plans for the construction of a multipurpose court, the establishment of a Youth Training Centre, and the creation of spaces designated for economic activities.
Highlighting the government’s dedication to empowering young people, Minister Saukuru connected the forthcoming projects to the broader agenda of fostering youth development. The plan for the multipurpose court awaits the selection of suitable land by the Rotuma Council of Chiefs. The minister affirmed the intention to collaborate closely with the Council to provide more growth opportunities for the youth.
In addition to the structural projects, the Ministry supported the event with a generous distribution of resources, amounting to $115,000, aimed at equipping youth clubs with sewing machines, sports equipment, solar tools, and a sound system. This package is seen as a catalyst for entrepreneurship, skill enhancement, and physical activity among Rotuma’s youth.
The festival itself was a tapestry of celebration and education, where participants engaged in workshops on sewing and garment construction, tie-dye, small engine repair, and solar power installation. The festival concluded with participants receiving certificates to honor their newly acquired skills, solidifying the festival’s aim to instill confidence, unity, and cultural pride among the island’s youth.
Minister Saukuru echoed sentiments of optimism and forward-thinking during the closing ceremony, encouraging the youth by stating that they are the future leaders of Rotuma. The educational tools and experiences they gained better position them to shape their future and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
The festival aligns with previous commitments by Fiji’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, which have consistently focused on engaging islands’ youth through events that blend tradition with modern opportunities. This demonstrates a continuing effort by the government to provide a supportive environment that not only fosters leadership but also offers practical skills and entrepreneurial opportunities for the youth in Rotuma.
